The Schlegel-University of Waterloo Research Institute for Aging (RIA) is a product of the philanthropic spirit and vision of Dr. Ron Schlegel, who's family have been proving Long Term Care to Ontario residents since the 1950's.

Formed in 2005, the goal of the RIA is to promote research relevant to aging in community and care settings, focusing on practice-revelant research as a driving force behind innovation and quality care. Among other topics, researchers affiliated with RIA are investigating spirtuality, balance and posture, function abilities and dementia, in order to improve quality of life and for older adults.
Please join us on this venture with supporting our $9 Million capital campaign goal to build a new home for the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging located on the North Campus of the University of Waterloo.

Innovation for an Aging World is Urgently Needed

The number of people over age 65 is growing exponentially, partly because baby boomers are aging, and also because people are living longer. In fact, the fastest growing group is 80 years and older. By 2017, for the first time, Ontario will be home to more people over age 65 than children under age 15. This aging propulation faces new challenges of how to make their additional years enriching and satisfying, since aging is often accompanied by a decline in health and wellness.

These changing demographics are also placing unprecedented pressures on the health care system to the point that it will not be sustainable for the future. The urgency has never been greater and the solutions lie in innovation in research, education and practice.
